Quick answer: A useful body jewelry label identifies what is in the pack and connects it to the purchase record. Keep the SKU, variant, pieces per pack and supplier references together. A SKU identifies a product configuration; it is not automatically a manufacturing lot or a test-report reference.
Separate product identity from production history
A product can use the same SKU across multiple deliveries. The SKU helps identify the design and selected configuration, while a supplier lot reference may distinguish production groups. A receiving number identifies your own receipt. Record each reference in its own field so that a local stock code is not mistaken for a supplier batch number.
If no supplier lot number is supplied, record that it was not provided and ask what traceability is available. Do not create a number that appears to be a manufacturer's identifier. You can assign an internal receiving reference as long as it is clearly labeled as your own.
Suggested label and receiving fields
| Field | Purpose | Check against |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier and order reference | Identify the purchasing relationship and delivery | Purchase order and packing list |
| Product SKU and variant | Identify the selected configuration | Product page and order line |
| Pack quantity and received packs | Distinguish pieces from selling units | Pack label and invoice |
| Supplier lot, if provided | Preserve the supplier's production reference | Original label and confirmed supporting documents |
| Internal receiving reference | Find your own inspection and stock records | Receiving log |
| Report reference and scope | Show which evidence is available and what it covers | Complete report and any confirmed product or lot link |
Preserve the chain when splitting packs
Before dividing a received pack into storage bins, record the original label and quantity. If products move into new bins, carry the source receiving reference into the destination record. Keep separate deliveries distinguishable when their supplier references, finishes or inspection status differ.
For products ordered sterile, agree the required sterile-barrier labels, dates and handling conditions before delivery. General product labels and representative certificates do not establish sterile status. Avoid opening or relabeling a sealed barrier without an agreed process.
Link documents without overstating coverage
Store complete report files with the number, issuing laboratory, date and sample description. Add a link to a particular SKU or delivery only when there is supporting evidence for that link. A representative chemical-composition report does not by itself establish the mechanical properties, packaging condition or status of every finished item.
Buyer questions
Is a barcode the same as a batch number?
No. A barcode can encode different identifiers. Check what the specific code represents and retain the human-readable reference where available.
What if a lot reference is missing?
Mark the missing information, preserve the original packaging and ask the supplier what records can support the delivery. Keep your internal receiving reference distinct from supplier identifiers.
